The Importance of Providing Your Logo in PDF
When preparing logos for professional printing, it’s essential to use the right file type. While JPGs or PNGs might look fine on screen, they’re not always suitable for high-quality print. Here’s why vector formats like PDF, AI, or EPS are preferred — and often required.
1. Vector Files (PDF, AI, EPS) – Scalable & Print-Ready
- Scalable without losing quality: Vector graphics are built using mathematical paths, not pixels. This means they can be scaled from a business card to a billboard with no loss of clarity.
- Editable: Colours, shapes, and sizes can be easily adjusted by designers or printers.
- Perfect for print: Printers need clean, crisp lines — only vector files ensure this level of quality.
Common formats:
✔️ PDF (with vector outlines)
✔️ AI (Adobe Illustrator)
✔️ EPS (Encapsulated PostScript)
2. Why JPGs (and PNGs) Are Not Ideal for Print – Unless High Quality Versions Can Be Supplied
- Pixel-based (raster) format: JPGs are made of pixels. When you scale them up, they blur or pixelate.
- Low resolution: Most JPGs found online or used on social media are 72–150 DPI (dots per inch). Print requiresat least 300 DPI for sharp results.
- No transparency: JPGs often come with white or coloured backgrounds, making them hard to overlay on designs.
- Not editable: You can’t easily change colours or separate layers.
JPG/PNG are fine for:
✔️ Websites
✔️ Social media
✔️ Email signatures
Real-World Example
Imagine printing a logo from Facebook on a 2-meter sign. It might look fine on screen, but in print it will appear blurry, jagged, or pixelated. A vector file, however, will stay razor-sharp at any size.
What If You Only Have a JPG?
No problem — we can help you:
- Contact your original designerand request logo files in vector format
- If you only have a JPG, ask the original designer to recreate it in vector.
